EDIT: Livestream done!
I took a class last semester called Digital Portfolio, and the biggest assignment of it was to make a website to display our art. I designed and coded (with much help on the coding from my teacher) my own website for my art (including photography, fine art, and graphic design). I will still be keeping Dorky Dino. Dorky Dino is for my business of selling cute characters on products, and "Brandi Miller Art" is for the rest of my art, so they will stay somewhat separate. My new art website can be found at brandimillerart.com. Check it out and let me know what you think! You can also now become a fan of my art on Facebook by going to facebook.com/brandimillerart.
Another class I took last semester was Portrait Photography. That's why I've been uploading so many portraits recently. I've also been adding a lot of portraits to my favorites to inspire me. Some of them I even showed to the class. Here's a feature on some of the portraits that I think are inspirational or well done. I will do more features on portraits later because I have a pretty big collection of them now.

Is it vital to have the facebook plugin on the main page? I found it a little distracting as it doesn't quite 'fit' with the rest of your content. You could consider a set of social icons or something instead maybe.
Hope you don't mind the critique!
Originally I had the Facebook plugin in the same colors as my site so that it would fit in better, but I got comments that people didn't know what it was because it wasn't the normal Facebook colors. I was thinking about changing it to just an icon like you were saying, but I also wanted people to be able to see the updates (like if I say I'm going to be selling at an event or something), but I suppose if they already watch my Facebook page that won't be a problem.
Do you also find the Facebook plugin distracting on my Dorky Dino site?
And I actually like the critique because it helps me know how to make it better!
My personal preference when designing portfolio pages is to have a blog or updates section. But obviously that requires more work compared to the plugin. Although, you could just put the plugin on a separate page.
The plugin looks fine for the dorky dino because of the scheme and purpose of the site. I just think that for a art/photography portfolio site, the focus of the main page should just be your art/photography. See here for an example [link]
That's just my opinion of course
I also thought about putting the plugin on a separate page, but the problem with that is that I don't have much room for additional pages. I've already got 11 pages, and I feel that that's really pushing it for a portfolio, plus if I ever want to add a contact section, or a link to a shop, it will be even more. I really liked the plugin on the front page for Dorky Dino, because as soon as people went to my site, they saw that I had Facebook and I got TONS of new fans that way. No one will click on a link that is just for a Facebook plugin, so I might as well just use a little icon like you were saying. (As a side note, I was actually trying to put in the little "like" button the other day, but I could not figure out how to get it to go to the bottom instead of the top. When I finally got it pushed down to the bottom, it was way down in the footer area instead of where I wanted it. If I do the Facebook icon I'll have the same issue, but I don't have my teacher to help me fix it anymore. D= )
I also was never sure what to put on the front page of my site. The picture that I have there now is already one that can be found in the portfolio sections, so I don't see the purpose of having the same picture twice. I thought about putting a little slideshow, like some other people in my class did, but that would be the same problem, since the pictures would already be elsewhere. Also I wouldn't want people to get distracted by my first page and sit there watching it instead of clicking onto the portfolios that they want to see. Also my main focus in school is graphic design, so you'd think that is what should be on the front page, but I felt like it didn't make as much sense having that on the front page. I don't really know what to do with it. Do you have any suggestions?
I also wanted to put a small link to Dorky Dino on the front page, around where the Facebook thing is.
Sorry for the super long comment. haha. Thank you for the suggestions! I really want this site looking nice so your advice is welcome!
As for the front page, a slideshow would perhaps be a good idea for you. That way you could showcase a slide for different areas, graphic design/photography/art etc. There's nothing wrong with duplicating pictures aslong as it's kept to a minimum. When I design portfolios for people I limit the front page sliders to around 3-5 slides. This gives the user a brief glimpse of the work, allowing them to click further if they're interested. You have draw the user in to browse your site, rather than just hoping they'll browse it after they see your front page.
I mostly use a slider called Nivo. It's free for non-wordpress sites. It's quite easy to use once you get the basics understood, the tutorials are really helpful too [link]
I hope that helped a bit. And no worries, I like to see a monster comment once in a while
Nice! Thanks for the link! I'd seen things like that on sites before, and kind of wondered how they did them. That will be helpful!
