This was our first big project in Ceramics I.

Our assignment was to make a coil built utilitarian vessel, using organic shapes and textures. My mom is a cake decorator, so I got the idea to use icing bags and tips with clay to decorate my vase. I built up an organic shape with coil and then used slip in icing bags to "ice" the lip and the foot. I decorated the outside to look like sprinkles.

Because it is painted with coloured slips instead of glazes, it can't actually hold water, so it's not really a true vase. It's meant more as a sculpture.

Made with terracotta, and painted with coloured slips.
Approximately 13" high at the tallest point and 6.5" wide at the widest point.

Mmmm... good thin I'm eating while looking at this. XD I meant to comment on this earlier, but I couldn't figure out what to say. It's a creative idea- making a vessel (waterproof or not) that's based on cake. :D I like all the little sprinkles, and the top of the vase reminds me of a mouth. O.o Something about the shape just makes me think of an animal's mouth for some reason. Like one of those sci-fi desert worms- except we're talking about dessert. :shrug: Pretty neat correlation, in my mind. Don't ask why it makes me think of those things. ^^;

It would have been very interesting to see this done in brighter colors- more like a birthday cake. Again, a pretty cool idea.

Haha thanks!

My boyfriend said it reminded him of a plant, like Little Shop of Horrors. hehe. It does kind of look like a mouth! Your "dessert" joke made me giggle. XD

I wish I would have had brighter colours! We didn't have very many choices, and most of them looked very pastel. It was also hard figuring out what the colours would look like after being fired, because for some reason our teacher threw away the examples. =/ I agree with you on the colours. I would have loved trying bright ones.

You're welcome!

Hahaha, that one works too. XD Yay! I have succeeded in making someone laugh today.

Man, that sucks. Pastel probably would have looked really weird (it probably would have looked more plantlike actually)... and why in the world did the teacher throw the examples away?! Ack!

Haha it's always great when you can make someone laugh!

I kind of consider these colours pretty pastel-ish. haha. They were our only options.

I don't know! D= haha

It is! Makes my day! :D

They kind of are... I just always think of baby-girl pink and the pastel shade of green, like those mints that just about melt in your mouth. :drool: ^^;

:lmao: Who knows? It makes no sense to me, though, that's for sure.
